My dearest little Monster,

Can you believe it’s here?  We finally started the blog!  I hope that blogging together will help minimize the distance between us — although you moving to the Carolinas in the fall will knock off a good 400 miles.  Yay!  I think I should start planning my trip soon.

Warning: The rest of this post is *super* cheesy.

After getting some very big news yesterday, this morning’s gray, rainy weather just didn’t seem appropriate.  The weather killed all motivation to get out of bed.  (It even destroyed my plans to go pick up free tickets for this at the Kennedy Center.)  Lounging about, I got to thinking about what mom always says about the rain and I realized that maybe a rainy day is the perfect backdrop for this new (fortunately employed) chapter in my life. Do you know which momism I’m talking about?

“Rain makes the grass greener.”

Given that it rains at 2pm daily during a Florida summer, I rolled my eyes behind her back a lot.  (Sorry, Mom.  I know you’re probably reading this… Keep reading, I promise you’ll feel validated!)  When rain is a pattern, it’s more than the sky that becomes overcast.  A general malaise sets in. And frogs apparently seek my bedroom because they want to avoid getting a disease that is causing hundreds of species to go extinct.

In a lot of ways, the last year of my life has felt like one long rainy day.  The sun would briefly peek out from behind the clouds, but each series of interviews led to the same judgment:  Second. Choice. Candidate.  Talk about a cloud over my head!

With this new job, I have a feeling that things are about to get sunny again.  After a year of frugal living, managing uncertainty and tackling challenges I never expected, I think I’m pretty well watered.

So, what’s the point?  Call me with your clouds, your drizzles and your floods.  I’m here for you as you head off to college and face your own rainy days!

I love you,

p.s. I couldn’t decide which video to post, so here are two fantastic videos about the rain. 🙂
