College Wisdom #2: Eat Healthfully July 20, 2010

Dearest Monster,  

Okay, time to get my health nerd post out of the way.  You knew this one was coming, right?   

Before you criticize me for using the word healthfully instead of healthy, read this article from the Washington Post.  Eat foods that contribute to your overall health (eat healthfully) and avidly avoid unhealthy foods (don’t eat crap).  If you aren’t careful, you could find that the stress and carelessness might lead you to eat something resembling my most infamously unhealthy breakfast….

**Yes, I ate these things for breakfast.  

I recognize that you and I probably have very different views on what is healthful.  I tend to eat a little bit like this girl and I end up eating breakfasts that look like this–not exactly mainstream.  Still, I think we can agree that the above menu options are not okay.  It’s a slippery slope, Monster.     

   

University of Oregon posts these tips for heathy eating for the busy college student.  I don’t agree with many of them, but they’re a good place to start.  Here are the tips I like–with notes:  

  • “Eat a good breakfast.”  They suggest fruit, bagels or juice. 
    I disagree.  Step away from the bagel and put down the juice.  Both items rank high on the Glycemic Index (that is, they carry a high glycemic load) which means that the sugars are quickly broken down into glucose and released into the body.  Why is this a bad thing?  Insulin, the hormone that regulates glucose metabolism in the body, responds to the accelerated sugar release.  Elevated blood sugar levels over a long period of time confuses your body and it begins to struggle to produce insulin and to regulate glucose levels.  Ultimately, we both know where this ends: diabetes.  (Okay, that’s a little extreme, but you know what I mean.)  Might I suggest healthy veggies, fruits and nuts instead?
  •  “Keep healthful snacks on hand so if hunger strikes during a late night study session, you won’t be tempted by vending machine candy, chips, or ice cream.” I like that they suggest keeping vegetables on hand.  You know my feelings on pretzels (see above), but the concept is good.
  •  “Drink lots of water.” Yes.  Do it.
    I’ll add: “Choose caffeine in emergency situations.”  You don’t want to end up like me during my freshman year….

 

I think I like this tip best of all:
Carry a shoulder bag, not a backpack: If you were going to sneak food out of the cafeteria, bring an open shoulder bag. It’s easier to throw food and drinks into it than a zippered backpack. Just make sure there aren’t any cameras around, and you toss a jacket over the opening when you check out. (#65 of
