Okay, Monster.  I know you’ve been super busy with your fantastic end-of-summer plans like seeing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (twice, I believe?!) and going to Warped Tour when it stopped in Orlando, but it’s been several days and I still haven’t gotten a blog post about WizWorldHP.
p.s. I want pictures!

While you’ve been yucking it up and having summer fun, I went on a little Twitter treasure hunt to find you some nuggets of college wisdom.  As usual, the twitterverse was happy to oblige.  Some of the tweets are helpful:

See? I'm not the only one pushing gmail....

Others….. Well, not so much:

Yeah, you won't get this advice from me.

Over the next few days and weeks, I’m going to share with you my favorite tweets.  And look for a new page where I’ll post all of the #CollegeWisdom I collect on your behalf.

Love you, Monster!

College Wisdom #2: Eat Healthfully July 20, 2010

Filed under: College Tips,health,nutrition,on-the-go,Uncategorized — Keri Kae @ 8:48 pm

Dearest Monster,

Okay, time to get my health nerd post out of the way.  You knew this one was coming, right?

Before you criticize me for using the word healthfully instead of healthy, read this article from the Washington Post.  Eat foods that contribute to your overall health (eat healthfully) and avidly avoid unhealthy foods (don’t eat crap).  If you aren’t careful, you could find that the stress and carelessness might lead you to eat something resembling my most infamously unhealthy breakfast….

A half a pint of this leftover from studying the night before:

Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk
Ben & Jerry’s Oatmeal Cookie Chunk

And one of these to counteract the sugar-crash bound to ensue:

SugarFree Redbull
SugarFree Redbull

Of course, there’s always the ever-so tempting:

Chicken Lo Mein
Chinese Takeout Leftovers

**Yes, I ate these things for breakfast.

I recognize that you and I probably have very different views on what is healthful.  I tend to eat a little bit like this girl and I end up eating breakfasts that look like this–not exactly mainstream.  Still, I think we can agree that the above menu options are not okay.  It’s a slippery slope, Monster.

University of Oregon posts these tips for heathy eating for the busy college student.  I don’t agree with many of them, but they’re a good place to start.  Here are the tips I like–with notes:

  • “Eat a good breakfast.”  They suggest fruit, bagels or juice.
I disagree.  Step away from the bagel and put down the juice.  Both items rank high on the Glycemic Index (that is, they carry a high glycemic load) which means that the sugars are quickly broken down into glucose and released into the body.  Why is this a bad thing?  Insulin, the hormone that regulates glucose metabolism in the body, responds to the accelerated sugar release.  Elevated blood sugar levels over a long period of time confuses your body and it begins to struggle to produce insulin and to regulate glucose levels.  Ultimately, we both know where this ends: diabetes.  (Okay, that’s a little extreme, but you know what I mean.)  Might I suggest healthy veggies, fruits and nuts instead?
  •  “Keep healthful snacks on hand so if hunger strikes during a late night study session, you won’t be tempted by vending machine candy, chips, or ice cream.” I like that they suggest keeping vegetables on hand.  You know my feelings on pretzels (see above), but the concept is good.
  •  “Drink lots of water.” Yes.  Do it.
I’ll add: “Choose caffeine in emergency situations.”  You don’t want to end up like me during my freshman year….

I think I like this tip best of all:
Carry a shoulder bag, not a backpack: If you were going to sneak food out of the cafeteria, bring an open shoulder bag. It’s easier to throw food and drinks into it than a zippered backpack. Just make sure there aren’t any cameras around, and you toss a jacket over the opening when you check out. (#65 of
101 Ways to Hack Your College Cafeteria)

What is the food storage situation like in your dorm?  Do you have a mini-fridge?  A freezer, too?  A kitchen?

I Love Weekends (Or: Click on this!–and this, and this…)

First, I hope you found a gift for Andrew.  Dad said you were looking again yesterday…   Second, I’ll respond directly to your post later this week.  For now, I am going to show you my weekend through a series of links.  Enjoy!

Enjoy the free time while you can, my little Monster!  In just a few weeks, you’re going to have to go to classes, attend meetings for all of the *awesome* clubs you’ll want to join, drink lots of coffee (or, in your case, frappucinos) with new friends and try not to be exhausted with all of the seemingly free time you have in college.  Alas, I started my new job last week and, after completing only two days of full-time employment, I have decided that I love weekends.  Why?  I’m so glad you asked….

Weekends mean carefree fun and relaxation!

You see, when I was living the freelance lifestyle, my schedule on Saturday might look identical to my schedule on Tuesday.  Client meetings, creative projects and number-crunching could all take place during the weekend.  Without the protection of 9-to-5, I could even be working at 10pm on a Saturday night!  Not anymore, baby sis!  This girl’s got a life now. 🙂

After work on Friday, I headed to yoga–where I did this (Try it! Here’s how!) and this.  Such a fun class!  Afterwards, I met up with my friend Kelly for dinner.  She’s a former Grier-ling, too.  We went to this fantastic burger place that just opened up a few blocks from my apartment.  Unfortunately, I had a turkey burger for lunch that day, so I ate this instead.  I can see your eyes rolling now.  Stop that!

Saturday was all kinds of fun, including bunch at this eclectic little place (they were playing Looney Tunes during our meal!), pool time in Virginia and a party for my friend moving overseas.  Then I had a great conversation with you and wished I was at the party back home.  I hope it went well.

I skipped ballet on Sunday, but made it to my friend John‘s cookout.  I was feeling motivated, so I decided to walk to his place from my apartment.  Google maps says it’s 4.4 miles away.  It was probably 100-degrees and a million percent humid.  Not very well thought out.  Still, I got in a nice long walk, talked to dad and worked up an appetite for the delish grillmaster stylings of @johnYSchen.

After John’s, a friend and I intended to go see some jazz at a neat little lounge downtown.  There wasn’t a single seat open in the place, so we wandered a bit until I heard Motown music blasting from the roof of a local hotel.  We checked it out, but it was filled with folks who look and act like this. (You really should click on this one.  I mean it.)  We eventually landed here, another local hotel lounge where they had–get this–padded white walls and psychedelic lighting.  It was just too kitschy to leave!  Side note: It’s a sister hotel to the place where we stayed with mom and Hoku when I first moved up here to DC. I wish I had gotten pictures of the characters hanging out in that place.  You would have died laughing.  After a glass or two of wine, it was time to get home, get to bed and start the work week all over again.

Le sigh.

Love you!

p.s.– Follow Kelly on Twitter.  She’s hysterical.

Oh!! I forgot to put this in my last post: I got my AP scores! I was kind of nervous to open them  to be honest. I was (sort of) prepared to fail two of my four exams – Latin: Vergil  and Chemistry. I ended up passing all but one 🙂

Art History – 4 (yay!! that made me so happy!  😀 )

English – 4 (yes! now I don’t have to take English in college!! hehe  😀 )

Chemistry – 3 (so glad I passed that one! I honestly didn’t think I really learned much in that class – or at least enough to pass the exam, but I guess I was wrong. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong!  😀 )

Latin – 2 (ya, I kind of saw that coming…. but it’s better than last year… :/  I was not expecting to pass that one at all. I haven’t actually learned any Latin since Sophomore year in Latin 2 and, by the middle of Junior year in AP I had completely forgotten everything I had ever learned in Latin…. oh well. I was planning on taking a language in college anyway. Italian perhaps??)

Well, I think that’s it for now…. If I think of anything else, I’ll post yet again!  🙂

So I’ve been reluctantly busy lately. Mom’s had us on some crazy cleaning spree for her party tomorrow. She’s had us clean everything! – that includes pulling weeds, laying mulch, and painting the front walkway :/  blah…  I will be soooo glad when this party is over!! Then I can finally go back to having my own life! 🙂

On top of that, I’m trying to hang out with all my friends before I leave Orlando forever and never, ever see them again! 😥   ok a little dramatic, but you get the point. I was hanging out with some friends the other day and it hit me: in one month, we’re all going to be splitting up. Two months ago it seemed like it would never come; but now it seems like time’s moving in fast forward. It’s just weird to think about leaving and starting over. I’m actually starting to get a little nervous about college…. :/   but at the same time I’m excited to start over in a new place  🙂   Plus, I really like Charleston 🙂

So other than that, right now I’m in the middle of trying to come up with a birthday present for Andrew.  …I’ve got nothing….  :/  But I WILL find something!! by Tuesday….  yikes. This should be interesting….

Well, that’s about it for now. I promise to harass you again later  :p

College Tip#1 July 14, 2010

Filed under: College Tips — Keri Kae @ 1:20 pm

Dearest Monster,

I know you registered for classes back at orientation in June, but I thought it wise to share with you a piece of advice that mom shared with me when I was a freshman: Take at least one early class freshman year.

I can’t tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed my 8am writing-intensive class on intellectual property and public culture, but I will say that I was grateful for the built-in discipline check.  If I had it my way, I probably would have become nocturnal like my roommate who slept between the hours of 6 and 8am, 11am and 2pm, 3 and 5pm each day.  For some reason, kids going off to college like to hang out all night long–talking, drinking, working in the library (okay, yeah not really…)–and it really takes a toll on you!  Do yourself a favor and give yourself an excuse, nay, a reason to go to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour.

I love you,

p.s. — Here’s a little Wednesday fun for you from one of my favorite blogs, Hyperbole and a HalfThis is Why I’ll Never be an Adult.  Enjoy life, but don’t stay up all night!
